A Creative & Fun way I taught my Students Facts about Dyslexia

I wanted to start my school year off by teaching my students facts about their learning difference, Dyslexia.
This strategy of mine had BIG potential of  being the most boring
possible way to begin a school year!!
Thank the good Lord for giving me the idea to put our new mini iPads to use!
We did research via
YouTube
Google
and various books.

Each of my students took away some great facts about their learning difference.
The videos that have been created are as uniquely creative and special as each one of my students!
I wanted to share this video by a 2nd grade student with you -
her mom has given me permission to share.

Isn't her voice the cutest?!

The most important thing my students learned from this project is that knowledge is power ~
knowing about why they struggle has helped
them realize they are much more than their Dyslexia.
When you know the facts, you can own your struggles
and rise above them, discovering that YOU are
SO MUCH MORE.

I have a 7 yr. old son who is very bright and very artistic; however this school yr has been a bit of a challenge for him. Last yr. in kendregarten he struggled a bit and this year he's come a long way but still falls behind on his work. He gets it done but at his own pace which can be a problem at times. Teacher and councilor believe he might have anxiety but After watching your video I think he might actually have DYS. Any thoughts on this....would mean so much, ️thanx

Hi Norma Jean - it is tough to see your child struggle in school. When a child is bright, it can be hard to understand why they are not producing the work to match their intellect or keeping pace with their peers. This can be the result of dyslexia, ADHD, or other issues affecting the child. It can also be within the range of normal development.

Key characteristics for dyslexia include difficulty in spelling, reading fluency and accuracy, and other issues mentioned here in the video - all that are UNEXPECTED based on the child's intellectual ability. If this sounds like your child, it is worth investigating further. Start with your child's teacher to get a better understanding of the challenges your child faces in the classroom and strategies that are being used by the teacher to address those issues. Ask what support is suggested for you to provide at home. Find out what steps are next if your child is not making the progress needed to be successful academically.

Some important ways you can help your child now and in the future:
1. READ to your child on a daily basis. Reading to your child helps them acquire a larger vocabulary, develop comprehension skills, and gain a strong interest in books.
2. Let your child SEE you reading. When a child sees that reading is important to the parent, interest grows and they see the value in the activity.
3. ENGAGE your child in reading and writing. Encourage them to help you make a list for errands, find items in the store or pantry, write letters or words on the tile in the bathroom while taking a bath using shaving cream, connect the beginning sounds of words to the letters that represent the sound - ending sounds, too. Helping to connect literacy to every day events helps children see the relevance of the skill.

Good luck to you. Parents are the most important teacher and advocate for their child. Stay in contact with the teacher and your child's progress. Early support pays off and builds a strong academic foundation for every child.
